Social Services at The Father McKenna Center

The Father McKenna Center has evolved into an agency serving annually (FY'10) 29,925 men, women and children in the North Capitol area, historically among D.C.'s poorest areas.

The Father McKenna Center drop-in center provides breakfast and lunch to homeless men Monday - Friday. In fiscal year 2011, the Father McKenna Center served noon meals to 12,430 men. In order to eat lunch here, men are required to attend our 11 AM support group meetings. Our noon meal is a substantial meal prepared by our chef. In many cases, the noon meal will be the only substantial meal a man will have that day.

On Tuesday mornings at 8:30 AM, the Father McKenna Center provides donated clothing and toiletries to our guests. Clothing can be provided on an as needed basis to those needing to dress for a job interview, funeral etc.

Having a telephone to make and receive calls is essential to homeless men seeking employment. The Father McKenna Center provides a phone to be used by our guests and takes messages throughout the day.

Homeless men can use the Father McKenna Center as their mailing address. We sometimes are asked to receive the mail of a man in prison anticipating his release. Our mail service is essential to those seeking employment and receiving vital documents and checks.

Guests of the Father McKenna Center drop-in shelter can take showers from 8:30 AM to 10:45 AM.

The Father McKenna Center laundry is available to our guests Monday-Friday.

From November 1 to April 1, the Father McKenna Center provides the opportunity for up to 25 homeless men to come in from the cold and eat a good meal in a safe environment. Unlike some emergency shelters, the Father McKenna Center is open each night seven days per week regardless of the weather. Evening meals are provided by the Gonzaga College High School mothers. The Father McKenna Center will provide a man with an army cot laid out in our three activity rooms.
